There are 45 doctors and 104 other health care workers with secondary and 2-year post secondary education providing primary adult care in Sombor. There is one doctor for every 1 699 individuals which is in conformity with the Health Care Regulation (1 doctor per every 2 000 citizens). The ratio of doctors to nurses is 1:2.3. The service is provided from 20 locations. 12 of them in the field of occupational medicine employ 18 doctors and 32 health care workers. There is one doctor for every     1 335 employees. The ratio of doctors to nurses is 1:1.6.

Children’s health services in the city are provided by 5 doctors and 10 health care workers with secondary and 2-year post secondary education. School health service provides health care to school children and youth aged 7-19.

Hospital care in Sombor is provided by the General Hospital. The hospital has 651 medical employees (65% of the total staff) and 351 non-medical (35% of the total staff). 145 employees, i.e. 22.3% of the staff have university degrees (137, i.e. 94.5% of them are doctors), 47 employees, i.e. 7.2% have 2-year post secondary education, while the majority of the staff (459, i.e. 70.5%) has secondary education.   

General hospital in Sombor provides services for 214 011 citizens of the West Bačka District and it has 908 beds. In 2005, the hospital provided 246 233 inpatient days for 20 054 people, with an average length of stay of 12.3 days. Wards with highest capacity utilisation rates are drugs, alcohol and borderline cases ward (94.3%), neurology (90.6%), gastroenterology (88.0%) and psychiatry (85.1%), while dermatology (16.7%), children’s ward (28.1%) and infectious diseases (28.5%) have the lowest capacity utilisation rates. The general hospital has 74.3% capacity utilisation rate. Bed turnover rate shows the number of patients using one bed in a time span of a year. Wards with highest bed turnover rates are obstetrics (52.1), children’s surgery (44.5) and surgery (40.1).
